Introduction to Hand Building Pottery
This introductory class will be a 2 week series in which you will learn about the various types of clay, best uses for each, how to prepare clay for use and make easy and simple hand built pieces.
We will discuss the basic processes of hand building which includes slab work, coil building and pinch pots with a focus on slab building. You will have the opportunity to hand build a plate, bowl, mug or tumbler. Following this class, your piece(s) will be bisque fired for you. After the bisque firing, you may choose to take them home and paint with acrylic paint or attend an Open Studio or a Pottery Class to glaze your work.
The pottery instructors will check all pieces for proper prep before firings. All firings, bisque and glaze, will be coordinated with other classes to ensure pieces are properly prepped and that full loads of bisque ware and glaze ware are properly fired. Check with your instructor for estimated dates of firings.
This introductory class is a prerequisite for attending any of the Pottery Classes
that are offered on a weekly basis.
An Introduction to Wheel Throwing class will be offered for those interested in
learning how to throw. See the website for dates and times.
